Default Made a Discovery Today

I recently added extended forward controls to my Night Train. It's a nice look and very comfy, but the shift linkage looked like it didn't belong (stainless steel rod w/ exposed adjuster threads). I was in the local H-D dealer parts department just looking around today and paused at the Dyna section. I took some measurements and discovered that the line of custom shift rods that is supposedly only for Dynas with forward controls are the exact right size for Softails with extended forwards. I don't know if they are all this way, but the plain one I got (p/n 33815-06) has a sleeve that moves with the adjuster. So even if you have it screwed all the way out (like for 3" extended forwards), no adjuster threads are visible. It always looks a custom length piece. Minimum eyelet-eyelet length is 14 3/8", which was perfect for my 2" extensions. It even includes a chrome transmission shift rod cover and nice hardware (though you don't need the supplied spacer on a Softail).

They make some nice pieces, and it's a hellova lot cheaper than having a custom one fabbed.

Nice find. I just bought a 3" extension for my original shift rod. Not the most appealing, but it does the job. Now I have to save the money for one of those!
