Starting bike w/clutch in

I always start mine in neutral unless I want to simulate an evo idle. I've actually been in a couple "old guys laughing at the new harley" situation trying to start in first with the clutch in. Sometimes it coughes out the intake and dies. Sometimes it seems to start fine in first. Been like that since it was new and never been adjusted in 15K miles. I've tightened the cable and that's all.

That happens because you have a wet clutch. My 09 Road Glide does the same thing. I always put it in neutral before starting. I also noticed, when it's warmed up a bit, if you pull in the clutch and wait about 5 to 8 seconds before you shift into first gear, you lose that first gear clunk. Just my experience......

Read somewhere (service manual?) that you should put it in neutral before turning it off because Harley doesn't recommend you start it in gear. Reason being that the clutch plates still have some friction even with the lever pulled back. Either due to the cold or due to precise measurements of today's parts? I don't know, anybody else read something like that?
..I'd leave it in gear too if I parked on a hill..

HOW DO YOU KNOW?
As stated above, clutch cable just needs to be re-adjusted. You need to let them know where you wish for your clutch to engage. No big deal really.
I always start my bike with the clutch pulled in.....the first time you go to start your bike in gear, with out the clutch engaged, with a ton of friends standing around, and bike jumps forwardand hits the bike in front of you....no more to say, and don't ask how I know
