Larger heads (combustion chamber) w/o larger pistons = lower power

BTW, I don't think the 103" kit includes heads:

Mr. Lucky is right. 103, is jugs and pistons. The heads on the 103 are the same as the 96.

103 is not just the heads.
the BB kit is new jugs and pistons which makes Ur motor 103ci....
then U can redo Ur head for better flow and cams to make her run even better...and bout another $3K-10k worth of work to her if U choose to..

My understanding on the 103 heads is that the valves are bigger and the eyebrows in the 96" pistons are too small, it can be done if the pistons are cut for the bigger valves. I was thinking the same thing but with that much work just go with the 103" with heads. You can have yours redone and get the same or better performance, the 103 haeds are not that great to begin with, there are so many better ones out there. Any engine can benifit from better breathing. A good set of heads on a 96 (w/cams) will outrun the MoCo 103 kits

The chamber volume is less on the 103 heads, not by much. If you want better heads then go with the MCR heads, they flow better, you also need new cams to make them work it is all a package

Heads and cams, all that stuff is good for racing. For just normal riding stock is fine.Always remember there is a pro and a con to everything.I would rather have more rideability than power in the 5,000 rpm range, how often are you going to operate there and keep your liecense?

I'm going to respectfully disagree with everything you said. Heads and cams ARE good for racing, BUT they're also great for the street. Stock is fine....for most people, but not all people. Some say that running a big motor is a trade-off (power v/s reliability).....This is not always the case. You can build tons of power, in the lower rpm ranges; doesn't have to be in the 5,000 range, as you stated. These bikes come under-powered from the factory. There's nothing wrong with bumping up a little for the power that you desire. Power is an addiction- the more you have, the more you want!

I can't believe what I am reading.

When going from 96 to 103, you are changing your jugs and pistons.

The heads are no different! Heads are heads!
the 103 heads is that the valves are bigger and the eyebrows in the 96" pistons are too small
If you shave you're heads to boost compression, then the piston reliefs have to be enlarged (whether 96 or 103).

Many 103 builds run stock valve sizes, others choose to increase the size of valves.

There is no such thing as different heads for 103.
