stripped trans cover, broken clutch cable
My latest, (and hopefully last for a long time) endeavor is changing out my 10" wild1 apes for 14" wild1 apes. This is how day 1 goes:
I was in the process of changing out my clutch cable for a longer Magnum clutch cable. Had the bike on the lift, and the trans fluid drained out.
I took off the transmission cover, then removed the clutch parts/bearings and unscrewed the clutch cable from the trans cover.
So far, so good. I'm happy.
I then proceed to screw the end of the new clutch cable into the transmission cover. Now I feel a little resistance. Hmm. Ok, well..it's not that much (and there was resistance unscrewing the stock clutch cable) so maybe it's just a little snug (so fluid can't leak out)!
Nope.
Next thing I know, it's turning and turning, and not going anywhere. I back it out only to find I've stripped the threads inside the trans cover and to make it worse, the threaded male end of the clutch cable broke off halfway in there. And now I have a useless transmission cover, and a brand new broken clutch cable stuck in the cover.
So now tomorrow I'm off to Harley to get a new Trans cover, and had to reorder the clutch cable. I thought about just getting a plain one from Harley, but decided it's better to get the nicer one for the same price online.
Guess I should look on the bright side, I'm technically still up $500 something by doing the work myself, this set back aside...but still, what a f__k up.
