tennis shoes and hot exhaust don't mix
How many times has this happen to you? I want to take a little short ride and my 9 year old spots me heading to the garage and wants to go with Dad for his ride. Not wanting to turn the little fellow away I say let's go. We hop on the bike and we're gone for an hour or so. His Mom looks at his sneakers and notices a hole in the heel. You guessed it, I have a wad of tennis shoe on my exhaust. Any good ways of getting this off without leaving marks? It was still worth it having him with me today. We stopped at the Harley dealer and he picked out his dream bike. A 2010 blue and silver classic. That's my boy!

My 'ol lady just melted her foamysoftpuss shoe on mine...I waited 'till it cooled a bit and just took a fresh window scraping razor blade and walked the stuff off until there was just a film left.
Then took Xylol (MEK, Laquer thinner...all about the same...homemade Goof Off) and wiped off the film, polished then waxed the pipe to seal it. Looks perfect.

+1 on the WD-40. I had a melted shoe stain thru most of the summer. Finally used WD and a soft cloth to clean it off, while hot. I rode the bike last week after removing a few trees from our yard... pine tree sap rubbed off my jeans onto the pipes and air cleaner. It wiped off the air cleaner easily, pipes are gonna need the WD-40 treatment again.

0000 Steel Wool
I have to agree with a couple of the other responses -- steel wool works great. Personally, I use "0000" steel wool, which is the finest grit of steel wool. I wanted to get the melted shoe rubber off it without scratching it and figured 0000 was my safest bet. I had the shoe crap off it in a couple of minutes -- came out so good that went over the rest of it too !!!
