When it happens at the muffler- that's just a result from the baffle. Heat generally collects at the front of the muffler in that area around the front of the baffle. I thought you meant up near the cylinder head before.

Generally, the more restrictive the muffler and it's baffle, the more discoloration (usually golden) you'll get.
