I don't know the law, but a friend of mine was ticketed for a vertical plate in the Chicago suburbs.

Another option is the Roto-Plate (that is my bike in the picture) from Top-Down Products. It rotates a full 360 degrees without having to loosen or tighten anything. Great product and equally great customer service (see my thread from June 15, 2009 for a description of what Dennis did for me)!

They also make a Roto-Plate Jr. that comes without the brake light.

Default not in jersey.

I haven't heard of people being hassled for it, but you will never get through a dmv inspection with it.

Like others from IL said, it's illegal here.. I know of at least 3 people that have been ticketed for it here in the last few months and have heard of others.. Mainly but the state conservation cops in state parks, especially Starved Rock in north central IL.. They were even driving through the parking lot writing the tickets and running plates.. Getting pretty bad up here..

If you ride a Harley, they're legal. If you ride a sport bike, anyway other than the way it came from the factory, they're illegal. Just what I see here in NY. Here in NYC, the Law hates sport bikers with a passion.
