I've learned to try to get gas before going to reserve on all my bikes. I've run out twice: once, in '99, I had bought a '93 900RR (still have it) and the dealer left the valve in the R position unbeknownst to me. I rode around thinking when I ran out of gas I would swith to R and go to a station. I ended up walking the bike to a gas staion, that turned out to be closed
Luckily, some dude in a pickup drove by and was into bikes and offered to go get gas for me. So, I was saved, and I rode with him the next night.
The worst, was the second time, about a year and a half ago. I ran out of gas on my '06 RKCustom going north on 275 in St. Pete. I was lucky enough to get over and coast down an exit ramp, but I had to leave my bike in the grass on the corner of 275 and 22nd Ave N St Pete! Not a good area. I started walking east to 4th street, but didn't see any stations, so I turned around and went west to the Racetrac. I bought a gallon container and gas, ten went back and was so happy to see my bike still there! Dumped the gas in and left! Now, I fill up at 150 miles, regardless of the guage!
