Default Popping during engine braking

2006 heritage pciii porker jacknives

I get alot of popping when I shift down and release the throttle.
Nothing though If I pull in the clutch.

Only on deceleration. Baffles are in. Map is correct.

2 questions.

1. Why does it do this? Is it normal?
2. Is it bad for my motor?

Besides this she runs perfect.

Cheers!

Change the map values in the first column to 1500 rpm to zero

Small amounts of unburned fuel will ignite inside the exhaust during deceleration and cause the "pop"..When you pull in the clutch lever the engine is drawing in less air and reduces the unburned fuel going into the exhaust...It shouldn't cause damage.

Cowboy is on target.

you could just stop using the engine as a brake...
in other words wait a little longer to down shift

I know that sounded a little like me being an ***, not meant that way at all.

Most engines will backfire a lot if the timing is just slightly slow. If remapping doesn't fix it, have someone that knows what they are doing, check the timing.

I went into the mountains today and had a lot of popping going down hills decelerating in gear. I think that's just the way it is.
