Default Question regarding new HD paint on older bike.

I just stop to wonder that right now there is a battle going on in the General HD Chat group about vivid black paint where some people are not satisfied with how the scratches turn out after a year or even less, the nice glossy vivid black is not vivid anymore. Makes me think that with this new colors that HD comes out with every year is there a chance that someone can go back and say I want 2010 color on a 2008 fatboy...would it be easier to get it done with the dealership since they guard the paint formula like a state secret or you go to a local paint shop and get it done... Has anyone done HD paint scheme after get turned off with the old/used motorcycle color scheme. I know many of you have bought used bikes and there is no real option of picking your color.. do you get custom color done or just live with the one that came from factory???

How much does it cost if you want to get something like that done..either with the dealership or with local paint shop??

I have a guy local that quoted me $2200 for stock paint scheme (including pin stripes) 2 RED candy colors (Brandy wine and old school candy apple) on a full dresser, guy does awesome work, I just have to learn to lay golden eggs so I can pay off all the medical bills and get her painted.

I've dealt with the folks at cycle color and they're awesome. If I were to repaint one of my bikes I would want something other than a factory color. It's a lot of work and expense just to wind up with a bike that looks like a thousand others. Otherwise I would just go on eBay and buy some used tins with a different color. FWIW gloss black is one of the hardest paints to keep looking clean and scratch free. It's not just a Harley thing.

every shop that paints bikes can get HD paint codes, but they can not or are not painting the bikes in the 14 step painting process, therefore it will not be as scratch resistant as the HD paint. the only true way to get that paint job is to buy painted parts from harley
