Default Rotating my bars a notch.. tech help.

Hi Guys,
Just asking, have any of you rotated your apes a bit forward yourself ?
Other than loosening the risers, rotating the bars and tightening again.. what else do you suggest ? use any materials ?
Torque values ?

Regards

And I thought I was mechanically challanged.

Don't know if you have splined or smooth risers. If smooth, just loosen them a bit. You only need to loosen one side of each riser.
Don't loosen too much as you don't want the bars slam'n down on your tank. Loosen them so you need just a bit of force to rotate the bars. Then just rotate to where you want the bars and crank 'em down. Ft Lbs??? Just crank 'em.

One tip I'd give is put a piece of tape on the bars near the risers to mark where they are now. Once you start moveing them around, you will not be able to tell where you started. So the tape gives some prespective.

Depending on how much you rotate them, you may need to loosen and rotate your hand switch houseings as well.

If risers and bars are splined, you need to loosen them more.

I actually keep a 1/4 Allen in my solo sack and make quickie adjustments at times....

Just loosen the bolts on the riser a tad...Like the above poster said be carefull not to loosen em' so much as to have yer' bars fall on yer' tank!!

Rotate the bars to the desried position and re-tighten the bolts. I dont even use a TQ wrench when I do mine...I go until they are tight as hell without stripping em out. If you use a ratchet and socket style allen you may wanna use the correct TQ value which is 25-35 Ft Lbs....

After that just loosen both control housings and lever clamps and rotate you throttle brake control foward as well as your clutch side and contropl housing.

The entire process is about.... 6 Minutes!!

Thanks guys,
Chaz.. you see what you started ? now I am going to go gangsta on the bike

Using photoshop I think I can go 5 degrees , 10 degrees is cooler but will attract cops attention and will be very uncomfortable.. so 5 will be cool to break the lines and still managable

Thank you guys for the great advice .. I love this forum

Tried that once and bent the metal part of my front brake line coming off the reservoir. That would be the only thing I would suggest to watch for.

As Chaz said plus remember to double check all the stuff you loosened, and carry around the tools you used for the first 2-3 rides as you will constantly adjust to get em perfect (at least I do).

Ha he said "Gangsta"!!!!! You arent the first that I've dropped the ****** hair bomb on....Only thing it isnt a ****** hair. Its a grip in your case as your bars are back way too far!!

Find the comfy spot....Set it there. Are cops attracted by bar angles up there?

Regardless of what you photoshop or cleverly deduce mathmetically just set it to where its comfy and rock that gangsta chit!!

Your bike is on my list of top 10 faves....I seriously dig your bike mang. We need photos of it after the big rotation!!

Where did you stumble across that badass bike Bro?

Are those your mods?

I'm sick with envy over your fork bellow dealies and whitewalls....I need fork bellow. I need whitewalls.

Get it done mang!!

Chaz, you flatter me, I always thought your bike is bad ***..
I will get on the rotation and pics once I get back home from business tomorrow ..

Once the bars are rotated they are 2" higher and cops in Ontario where I live get really pissed with high bars, so I will move my spring seat a notch up and forward at the same time , no biggie.

As for the bike, well, it is a story, I had a few good years racing tracks on a GSXR600 and on the street on an R1, then I felt I don't want to be mashed up, time to get a nice Harley, I got me an 01 Standard and fell in love with the new ride, I was just thinking I need some apes on it.

Next I know.. a cager U-Turns into me, Doctors telling me I may lose my leg, long story short, spent one year in bed surgery after surgery to save my leg, but Canadian health system is good (don't listen to anything else, I'm living proof )...

During this time I read many books about bike cutlure in North America and Canada, and many books on building choppers and bikes etc.. I moved from a geek who likes the way bikes look to someone who wants to wrench.

So, on a cane a year later I go shopping, landed this 01 Standard with drag bars on it.. and it has been a year and a half now, I basicly changed the fork lowers, and dropped the front 1", back 1.5", changed the seat (had Mustang solo, then Lepra barebones, finally the spring seat), the fork boots were a good ebay find, not fancy like the ness ones but I wanted 'no fancy', the white wall was just me tinkering and it worked well, I put some extra pinstripping and decals, changed engine covers and the bars ofcourse.

Next year I am hoping to fine tune the seat situation, powdercoat the triple trees black, and hopefully paint the bike flat black or Millitary green (think MASH ), and maybe poweder coat the rims copper/orange to highlight the white walls.. but this plan is ... more of a dream than a plan really, I like the bike the way it is now, and I am thinking of saving more money like the rest of us..

Ramble end..time to sleep

Thanks man again, I always read your posts and admire them.

Regards

A.

In case you are not aware, all you need to do is loosen the top bolts on the riser clamp. Only loosen them a turn or two and move the bars. Tighten them back up. Ride and see if it works for you. My bars are quite forward and that is the only way i am comfortable with them.

Nice post and thanks for the comps....

Dont let the death panel folks hear you say stuff like this tho:
Canadian health system is good (don't listen to anything else, I'm living proof )...
Until the recent health care debate I never knew Canadians were dying off in droves, had to wait 7 years to get in the emergency room and had to have babies in the hallways....

You saying that aint true?

Dammit...I've been duped by my man Rush!! That fat fvckin' liar. LOL!!!
