The headlight ring mounts to the nacelle bracket with what I think are called well nuts. These are nuts mounted in rubber. When the screw is tightened down the rubber expands to hold the headlight in place. I guess the rubber also isolates the metal ring from the bracket. At least four well nuts were missing and three were rotted. All the noise was coming from the ring hitting the mount at certain RPMs. Fortunately, the dealership had the parts in stock. For a few bucks I was able to clear up the problem.

This is one of the few times I was able to actually fix something on the bike. Usually I just break something else.
I was chasing a noise issue for about 3 weeks. I also thought it was pinging, but wanted to check other things first. Went from re-adjusting pushrods, pulling rocker covers to check clearances, and also changing riser bushings. Next on my list was to change fork oil so see if it was the springs. Then I found this thread. I replaced the well nuts in my nacelle....and poof...noise gone. Anyways, wanted to give credit to the OP. Thanks for the post!

You found it, thats the plus. Sometimes its the little things one could never imagine. Kind of funny everyone had you going to the extreme. Dont get me wrong, nice to have a place to ask questions and get input, but...hands on does it every time.
