Wasn't a Ping... Was the Nacelle
#11
I thought I was struggling with a bad ping but after some advice here and adjusting the ignition module with no change I started looking elsewhere. It turns out it was the headlight nacelle.
The headlight ring mounts to the nacelle bracket with what I think are called well nuts. These are nuts mounted in rubber. When the screw is tightened down the rubber expands to hold the headlight in place. I guess the rubber also isolates the metal ring from the bracket. At least four well nuts were missing and three were rotted. All the noise was coming from the ring hitting the mount at certain RPMs. Fortunately, the dealership had the parts in stock. For a few bucks I was able to clear up the problem.
This is one of the few times I was able to actually fix something on the bike. Usually I just break something else.
