I usually start looking for stations at about 180. I have been getting from 40 to 45 MPG so I could go a bit farther but I don't want to push it.

My light comes on 165-175 and it takes 1- 1.1 gallons to fill her up.
so I usually start looking around 140-150. but I dont get nervous about it.

You shouldn't even begin to worry about gas until your over 200 miles, even on a stock Harley where the engine isnt real efficient with gas. I don't worry about gas till I get close to 400 miles(My gas tank holds about 8 gallons, and my bikes averages a little over 50mpg even with an afr of about 13:1).

I get nervous when I see a little kid (6-7 years old) filling up Mom’s gas tank
while she's on a cell phone, smoking a cigarette and Dad’s adjusting the boom box.
So I was glad I could go a few more miles (200 on trip meter) to get gas else ware.

I worry when I hit reserve and there's no station in sight.

I don't usually go this far before filling up but I have once or twice. Around 200 miles is when I start to get "antsy" if I happen to ride that far between fill ups.

I saw my light ONCE on the way home from the dealer when I bought it used. They told me it had a full tank. I stopped on the way home anyway and it took 4.9 gallons I know fill up when I hit 125 or so.

On my '03 FXST it makes me nervous when the light comes on, but I've noticed that when it first starts coming on, it'll go on and off for a while depending on whether I'm going up a hill or down a hill, around corners, accelerating hard or braking hard. I don't start looking for a gas station until the light stays on. Even then it's rare that I'll put in more than 4 gallons. I figure for my bike when the light comes on and stays on I have around 40 miles (plus or minus a few) of freeway riding to find a gas station. From what I've read it can really vary from bike to bike though. I'd say either adjust it yourself or have the dealer adjust it so that the light doesn't come on quite as soon if it's bothering you so much and it's coming on with 2 gallons of gas still to go.
