I laid my bike down today, (I got cut off) and I am convinced it saved my bike. I was going slow, but it totally did its job. I will always use one from this day on. Without it, exhaust, paint, pegs, axles, handlebars, ect would have gotten trashed. Well worth the $250 I spent.
Yes they are a good idea. No the idea of temporary does not make any sense. Put them on an leave them on. You never know when you might go down. Your being a better rider has just a little to do with whether you drop the bike, or go down.
I agree with Kentucky Dave, I have had engine guards,(crash bars) with highway pegs on all of my bikes. On my last bike, I do believe it did save me some serious leg/knee problems.
I was thinking of installing an engine guard temporarily. Reason being .I dropped the bike practicing ride like a pro circles, and did some damage to the bike. Until I get better I thought it might save me some $s.
Sorry for going off topic about engine guards, but could you elaborate a little on the dropping your bike part? How did you manage this, and how long have you been riding. Also to the poster that said they help if you drop it in the garage or at a stop sign. I'm not saying I'm incapable of doing this, I cant imagine what the scenario would have to be in order for this to happen. I used to back my Bike's out of a storage building down a steep wooden ramp and down a steep hill not paved (backwards) until it flattened out enough to turn around, probably 85 feet or so, just grass, and never had a problem, except when the grass was wet, and It would slide for 30 feet or so, but never dropped them. Just curious!
