If you know you are gonna end up with a touring bike in the long run, why not just get a standard Road King and have it lowered?
Same basic look from the front end, all the storage you need. Or if you're feelin' frisky, try a Road King Classic.

Since this is your first BIG bike, I would suggest you get what fits and is comfortable to you. Everyone is right about it only takes money to make it "yours".

On the Heritage, you can always make everything detachable as most of us. I can put mine to cruiser mode, two up in 15 minutes.

Good Luck in your choice!

I do not own nor have I ridden either one, but my personal preference, based simply on looks alone, is the Deluxe.

The studded leather and stuff on the Heritage just turns me off. I think it's one of my least favorite Harley's.

So... DELUXE!

I'm only 5'4" and I'd ridden the Heritage many times before I went out and bought my barely used Deluxe with all the trimmings (bags, windshield, new pipes). Then I bought a new wider pillion for the wife on ebay for $80 and I was set. The Heritage is taller and a different ride and let's face it, it's just not as nice to look at as the Deluxe! Take the dealer up on their test ride offer and see what you think of the Heritage? I'll bet you decide to go with the Deluxe for it's looks and it's ride over the Heritage. Sounds like it'll cost about the same to outfit whichever bike you pick the way you want it anyway. So just get the one that you look twice at when you see them sitting together.
