Default Cost of the 103?

Does anyone know the approximate cost of a 103 kit? I am not looking for exact amounts, just ball park what I can be expecting to pay.

One dealer here charges around $2,200 parts & labor. That includes the SE Heavy Breather.

there are many different 103 kits. If you go to the HD site, at the top of the main page click on "experience",Then on the left side of the page you will see "racing" click on it. At the bottom of that page you will see "Screamin' Eagle Pro race parts.
Check that out & you'll have a better idea of what you want and the prices. Labor will vary from dealer to dealer. Most kits are pretty simple bolt on kits, so armed with a service manual and some skills ,it shouldn't be to bad to do yourself either.

Here is a link to the last page I talked about above. you have to download the catologs.

If I had a 96" I swear I would pull my heads and send them off for a full blown badass port job and add a set of cams to match.

A well sorted 96" with good heads, the right cams, a decent exhuast and a good tune will lay away a basic low compression cookie cutter dealership $1800.00 103 to rest.

Remember that you 96" has the same piston bore size as an 88". Its when Moco shortened the pistons by about a half inch and threw in the stroker crank that the lil' old Twinkie 88" became a factory stroker without CVO badges or the associated costs.

Bigger is generally better but your 96" can breathe straight fire with headwork and good cams. Especially compared to a run of the mill 103 dealership build. Big lazy low compression dealer installed 103" is cool but nowhere nears as cool as a hot 96" that well sorted.

Obviously a 103 with headwork and the right cams is gonna be even nastier...Its all about what cha wanna spend.

If I were starting from Square 1 again, with a bone stock 96" motor, I'd call Steve at GMR Performance in AZ (HDWRENCH here on the forum). He has a "bolt on" 107" that sweet.....for $1995.95 (plus labor). 107" is the biggest you can go without splitting your cases. That kit will run circles around ANY HD 103" SE build.....for about the same $$$. Check them out at www.gmrperformance.com

Good to hear this as it is what I was leaning toward. Any ideas as to the best "bolt on" cams for the 96"? I know, I know, opinions galore. I have searched this stuff to death with no "real" answers.

I'm not saying that these are the best, but 2 of the most popular cams for a "mild" 103" are the Wood TW6-6 and Andrews 54. I run the Wood TW6G-7 in my 103" (they're a gear drive version of the TW6-6). My 1st engine build in this softail was a SE 103"- SE Flat Top Pistons, SE255 cams, SE Heavy Breather, Vance & Hines Big Radius exhaust....made 82/102. Wasn't enough for me, so I changed some things. I added a set of Baisley Heads, swapped cams to the TW6G-7 and a FatCat. Now makes 98/109. Just my opinion- SE builds are ok, but for nearly the same $$$, there is better performance out there.

Will those work with the 96" build though? I am thinking of just doing some head work, and installing some better cams, in my stock 96". Really hard to justify spending an arm and a leg for 7 cubic inches, JMO.
