My bad, and I appologize, you are entirely correct.
I went off half cocked like I said because its not the first time I have seen that.

Again I appologize

Thanks again for the responses. Amsoil 60 wt is HD specific according to their literature and is "motorcycle" oil for use in race bikes.

I believe that the Moco suggests straight 50. I don't why you would necessarily want to take it up to 60, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anything. However, !'m not willing to take a chance with mine. I run Moblil 1 VTwin 20/50.
Any particular reason you think you need 60?

The owners manual (page 84 in mine) recommends using straight 60W in temps above 80 degree's F.
But I think Mobile 1 20-50W for V-Twins would be more than adequate for virtually anywhere in the lower 48.

I work with a couple guys who ride older HDs...an 97 Softail and a 98 E Glide...both bought them about a year ago and it is both their first HD...they use regular Mobil 1 auto oil in them...I have tried to tell them that they should be using Motorcycle oil but they dont think there is any difference..they also buy the cheapest tires they can find....its AMSOIL V-Twin 20 50 and AVONs for my scoot...:>)

I`ve been using regular 20w50 auto oil in my `89 for 20 years now. Goes in clean, comes out dirty, just like it is supposed to do.

Seems to me, if the FSM says 60 Wt when above a certain temp, 20W50 probably doesn't cut it.
Red Line produces a 20W60. That would make more sense to me.

GM vehicles previously had a label on the oil cap that stated to use 5W30. If you looked in the manual for the car, it stated 5W30 woud only properly lubricate the engine up to something like 90*F. That don't hold the mustard in Texas!

NEVER had a problem. Ever and it always comes out clean.
How can motor oil that has been used come out clean??.

The job of oil it to lub and clean, and it should come out dirty if its doing its job.

This insert is from Valvoline oil co. www.whitfieldoil.com/www/docs/156.631

Question:
If the oil turns dark or black quickly, it's no good.
You can tell the condition of oil by the look, smell or color of it.
Dirty (black) motor oil means the oil is breaking down.

Fact:
A common misconception is that high quality motor oil should come out of an engine looking clean at the time of an oil change. Nothing could be further from the truth. If the oil is doing its job of cleaning the engine, then it should be dirty when it is drained. Motor oil will start looking dirty a short time after it is put to use. In the case of diesel engines, the oil will look dirty within a few hours of operation. These are signs that the motor oil is doing its job of keeping soot, dirt, and other combustion contaminants in suspension to be carried to the filter or removed from the crankcase when the oil is changed. Motor oils have been formulated to hold these contaminants in suspension until they can be removed with an oil and filter change.

My point is that if the Amoil is clean when U drain it, then IMO its not doing the job its supposed to and I definitely would not use it..
