I got caught in a downpour in the Fl Keys with mine.
Only had a couple of spits and sputters. A couple of revs cleaned things out everytime, not really a problem. Had to ride about 5 hrs in a hard rain to make it back to where I was staying.

 

Thanks for everybody's two cents. I'm getting use to the "sucking sound". Rains not an issue here (Sunny CA). I'm thinking about sealing off the "inner ring" of the AC to force air right down the throat, at 500 cfm I can spare the air. The filter was only $20 so I can afford to experiment a little.

 

If I were you I would leave the filter alone, it looks nicer than most. But get a rain cover for it to carry, just in case.

The place Cheesecake posted looks like a decent alternative to finding a Harley labeled cover that will fit and at about $12 its not a bad deal at all.

Rain in and of itself is not much of an issue to a running engine, it will swallow even a hard rain without any detrimental effects.

But too much rain on the filter itself will eventually saturate it and choke the engine.

Be like running with the choke **** pulled out all the time.

Caught in the rain a few times and the engine backfired like crazy. I cannot find a rain sock for my BS1, carry my football field cover every time I go on a trip, cheap insurance.

 

pretty much do the same thing until i find a correct cover for the Big Sucker stage 1! 128Auto keep me posted if you find one!!!

Looks like they have covers to fit just about every filter size.
They even have them in some 'other than black' colors if your interested.
Be a lot easier than toting the old football around all the time.

someone told me they used foam with velcro to keep out the water.
I wonder if a bowel with a magnet hot glued to the bottom of it would work

thanks, it is much easier to carry a rain sock, should fit in my tool bag.

 

Your welcome, a rain sock should be a lot easier to pack or carry on a trip considering the limited storage space available to us on a bike.

I have always liked the open filter look but as often as it rains around here I have never thought it would be practical. But ever since Cheesecake put up that site I have been giving serious consideration to making a new cover or end plate for the filter. Then getting one of those waterproof socks to stick in my handle bar bag or rain suit pocket for any time it does rain.
