I've put a lot of miles since putting my apes on with no issues at all. Did a 200 mile trip yesterday and was fine.

I may be a little longer in the legs than you, but here's what I do. I have put on the extended forward controls to start. When I'm riding, I kick my heels up on the pegs. This straightens out the legs and allows me to lay back a little. It gives me a more comfortable position without putting on an engine guard or mustache bar. Recently rode almost 500 miles like this, no back problem then.
