Unhappy True Dual Fishtails on my Heritage

I put a set of V&H true dual fishtails on my 01 Heritage (carbureted) ride. They sound horrible when decelerating as in coming to a light or in between shifts. they tell me at the HD shop that it is an air noise, the exhausts are sucking air, and it makes an awful rattle as it approaches idle rpm. Any body got any ideas what I should do? This cannot stay!!

Tom here from http://harleygoodies.com/ I also have the v and h true duals on my 2002 Heritage. It sounds like something might be loose such as heat shield or baffles or both. Mine do not make any sounds like that. It is common for the heat shields to loosen up a bit after install and few rides. I do not think I have heard of the baffles coming loose, but it worth a try.

Regards,
Tom

Others I know have Samson's with and without baffles. The samson's without baffles are extremely LOUD with a loud decel sound as well. The baffled version is not as loud and does not have the decel sound. If you are after that decel fishtail sound get the baffles less version or take your baffles out. Be aware you will lose some low end torques without baffles. There are solutions for this as well.

Tom

Tom here again. Good point from Wildman. Always change the gaskets. They are cheap insurance. Also check your flange nuts to make sure they have not loosened up as they have been known to.

Did you rejet the carb.....Horrible noise on decel could be excessive popping due to a lean condition....New pipes, means you usually have to adjust the carb

If nothing else is working loosen everything up and try readjusting things. It could be the header angles were slightly off when you bolted them down.

can't argue that's definately a popular style pipe.

From what I have learned, any time you have an air leak in the exhaust you will get decell popping. Thats when down shifting or in between upshifts..

When I had stage 1 done at 1k, the HD wrench didn't get a seal on either one of my slip ons, and even after retuning (SERT) it was still bad, Finally called Rush and tech knew what it was in 30 seconds after telling him what it was doing.

Had to take it back again as you could see day light in the 4 slots where the pipes connect to the headers because the wrench didn't put the clamps on rightl

After new clamps and correct install and another retune they got it right and no popping.
