Default Transmission shifts into neutral

I have a '99 Fatboy and have noticed over the last few weeks when I shift from 3rd to 4th sometimes it shifts into neutral. The neutral light does not come on when this happens and i have to shift down to get back into 4th gear. Any idea what would cause this? I just had the 20k mile service and they did not find anything wrong at that time. All of the fluid levels are where they should be.

Thanks

I had read somewhere about the first run of 6 speeds from the dyna's being recalled for false nuetral issues. I havent seen nor heard much about the first run of twin cammed softails?

Your bike may be Over-shifting. Yer' shift drum rolls past its detent for the next gear and either shifts two gears or gets a false neutral.

20K? Thats odd. How long ago was that 20K service? I would take them the bike and tell em' it didnt do that chit when ya' brought it. Maybe get some freebie diagnostic time?

I thought my response was pretty clear.... Was that somehow construed as trying to say that he has a Dyna with a 6 speed?

What I was trying to say and I'll make it more clear this time was that the first run of Dyna's with the 6 speed trannies were plagued with issue and that I had not heard of the first run of Twin cammed softails...Actually His is a 99 a last run evo softail. And I have yet to hear of or see them having any issues.

His bike is overshifting. I want to say its Baker or who sells an anti-overshift pawl that can be installed in his tranny to help with that issue.

Thanks for the responses. How difficult is the anti-overshift pawl to install?

Shop level difficulty level. Your gearset has to removed. You probably broke the scisssor spring on the shift pawl.

I wouldnt ride it anymore until its addressed. You can very easily junk the entire tranny as that spring goes through your gears.

Default Me 2?

Hey DoubleJ, Just purchased a 91 softail with extremly low miles and I have the same problem but only when I stretch the RPM band to closer to the red line. Normal shifting works everytime. Is this the same for you or no?
