Default starter not engaging

i have a 99 custom built softail and the starter is not engaging. it just sounds like it is grinding when i try to start it. any suggestions?

Pull the derby cover and have someone hit the starter switch and see if the starter gear is engaging the ring gear, if it is and it's not spinning the motor over, + 1 on the clutch, the starter clutch that is. If not it may be the solenoid.
