Default check engine light

Ok guys I have an issue after riding last night and today I noticed that my engine light comes on normal with the security light then goes out and then wether I start the bike or not it comes back on for 8 to 10 seconds then goes out never comes back on for the entire ride and bike runs fine until I shut it off then does it again. Anyone know what this could be I dont think its normal but it doesnt seem to be harming anything but I dont want to ruin something so any help would be great.

Do This:

Extended Text
1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting sould illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range
and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word €œdiag€ should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module)
to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)

P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module (EFI) / (Ignition Control Module, 'Carbureted')
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC€™s the code will be
displayed or the word €œnone€ will appear if there are no DTC€™s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

7 - Record the codes.

8 - If DTC€™s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up.
Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC€™s again by repeating steps 1 to 9.
If the code is current it will reappear.

9 €“ Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

10 €“ Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

ECM €“ Electronic Control Module. (The Computer) Computes the spark advance for proper ignition timing and fuel control based on sensor inputs

The dwell time for the ignition coil is also calculated in the microprocessor and is dependent upon battery voltage. The programmed dwell feature gives adequate spark at all speeds.

That does not seem to work on mine when i hold in the reset and turn on I get do1clr if i push it again it goes do2clr then do3clr and so on to do10clr if i push it again after 10 I get PPU, push again and I getnumbers. Any Ideas?

I had that happen after installing a PCIII. i dont have alarm system. I found out if i reset the defaults and reload a map it worked normal

hey tk how do I reset the defaults, I do have a pcIII and I was messing with different maps and then it happend I think I need to reset and reload, I guess I should have said in the beginning mine is a 2003 standard. Thanks guys

Is their a way to clear old codes? Or is it just how many times you start your bike up after the problem is fixed??

if i remember i loaded the zero map and then loaded the canned map.
also be sure your firmware is up to date.

if you have a older bike you can not simply hold the reset switch like on newer bikes.
what you have is an error code on your bike. it is wither in the history or it is current.

depending on your year bike you will have to install a small wire on the diagnostic port to get the engine light to flash the what this error code is.
use the search function to find the post that tells you how to do this in detail..
