Default D A M N Derby Cover

I cursed all of sunny Saturday fighting with that derby cover. Yes, I stripped out the Torx bolts trying to get them out! Yes I had the right size 27! Still they were too tight. I got two out okay (well not exactly okay), but ruined some torx heads in the process and stripped the heads of the bolts. Finally resorted to drilling the remaining three out.

I ended up taking the entire primary cover off to work on it. Needless to say I scratched my primary cover in the melee. And the primary cover leaked after I got it together. Took it apart again and re-seated the gasket and I think I am dry now. Maybe I put too much oil in it the first time.

And I am pissed still!!

So I gotta go buy some HD derby cover bolts. Anyone got the part number?

Too late now, but I believe that right before I stripped the first bolt, I'd put a little heat on it.

and WHO tightened it prior to this?? There are torque settings for a reason...in 9 years, I have never stripped a torx bolt. I simply don't understand how some do...

Bike was brand new never worked on by anyone except the factory. The factory tightened them before I got to them. Heat woulda worked I suppose. Live and learn or pay the sdealer $200 to do it, I suppose.

I have seen many of them come on brand new bikes that are torqued waayy too tight like that. Never stripped one, though....Just lucky.

I think I'm one of the few people on the planet who actually likes the torx setup... never had one strip on me.

I think a lot of problems people have is not fully seating the driver into the bolt, which really reduces the amount of torque you can apply.

My buddies 07 nighttrain had the same problem. It was way to tight from factory, I only stripped one but it was a pain in the ***. I had to drill it and take a easy out to it, worked great.

I've used an impact driver to break a too-tight Torx fastener loose.

hgiles, Wow, all these responses and no one answered your question. In my '07 parts manual, it says screw part # 961 for a FLSTSC or screw part # 1062 for all others. I hope this helps. Rusty
