I've been to Maui and have to agree it's an awesome experience. Didn't rent a bike but sure would have been fun.

 

about that road to hana....you know the twisty one with 52 single lane bridges that takes you like 2 hours to get through....you gotta watch out for the locals...they try and pass you in their cars around those bends and its quite unnerving....anyways i was in a cager and this guy kept trying to pass me so i would speed up on the straights and keep him behind me on the corners for about 45 min....long story short we got to the end where 2 lanes started up and he blew by throwing his coffee cup at me....hahahah just a funny story....beautiful ride though!

 

Went to Maui in 93'. The locals said don't bother with Hana... I have some regrets... Didn't rent a bike, but I did that bicycle ride down the volcano - now that was a rush!

 

lived in Oahu, north shore for 6 months. great place to visit but I caught island fever after 3 weeks. the only thing that kept me sane was I was able to rent a couple of times a month and ride....one of the best things was that the local airlines only charged like $34 to fly from island to island... so riding on the other islands was a must. probably the best riding experiences of my life.....

 

Gotta love Hawaii and Harley's! Rented a Fatboy in Kauai...fun, fun!!!

I only had one local that caught me on the road to Hana the 3 times I rode it end to end. toward the end of the route, once you hit the tropics, it rains every single night, so the road is wet in places in the morning. I had to go very slow in some places. I pulled over to let them pass as soon as I could.

I figured they have someplace to be for their livelihood, while I am just soaking in the scenery.

Most people on the road were great to allow me to pass, as I would catch up to cagers very quickly.

I can't imagine a local that told you to not bother with the Road to Hana. Of course if you were there in prime season, on a weekend, I can't imagine how crowded and dangerous that road would be with all the rubber-neckin' going on trying to see everything at once.

Axeman, nice pics......they have me wanting to go back. While on the Rocker, everytime I saw one of those 15mph squiggly road signs like in your picture, a tuning fork would go off in my loins!
