Default Speedo stopped working

Its on my dads 86 softail. The speedo stopped working. I have not even looked at the bike but was wondering on what is the best place to start? Is it normally the cable? Just looking for any info. Thanks as always.

Cable is the obvious first place to look. If the cable is ok put a drill on the end of it (on low speed) and check to see if the speedo moves. If so, it's the speedo drive. If not then it's the speedo.

Just replaced the cable on my 1995 Heritage. Mine broke at the bottom. New cable was about $20.00. Very easy repair, just take your time and don't scratch anything. Look how the old cable is routed and maybe even take a picture of old cable. I had 38K miles on the speedo when the cable broke. You may want to consult a manual for instructions on removal and install.
