Trying to buy a 2009 deluxe.

check the HD site. MSRP is there. Count on any bike in the showroom having a couple extras on it. Common are security system and smooth rims. Just a way for the dealer to get some extra bucks.

Both seem like pretty good deals. Good luck on the wheeling and dealing....

UTZ, good luck with your dealing.
I am going down today and hope to look at the used 07 and look at a new one for slightly below MSRP.
Many "stealers" are taking the stance to not discount thinking they can get more $$ in the spring. I do not follow this logic for 2 reasons:
1. You think they would want to sell current inventory to reduce overhead
2. No-one is sure what the economy will be like in the Spring and Summer.
I found 2 dealers willing to deal and few others actually quoting ridiculous prep fees.
I keep wanting to hold off a little longer, but I am not sure.

Serious buyer + cash = largest discount at this time.
You may find that many dealers will work the better deals (not far from private party cost and with some additional perks to sweeten the pot) on the used bikes they have. Sometimes a used bike is a better deal than new considering the accessories the previous owner paid for and the fact that dealers have taken in many on trade (or outright purchase) for pennies on the dollar. Dealers consider the used bikes sales "churn" to keep up floor sales volume thus the ability to work deals on them. The $7000 offer on your Sportster is very good, they will get back the difference of the offer for your bike vs. book value on the price they charge for the new Deluxe.
Something to also consider is the potential savings in sales tax based on the difference of your Sportser trade on a bike from the dealer vs. buying outright from a private party. That can sometimes be a pretty good chunck of change ;^)

I agree with Bloomington, I think a used bike can be bought at a lot better deal right now than a new. Mainly because of the economy and people dumping toys etc. I have seen alot of 1-2yr old bikes with several grand in accessories for $2-$5k less than a new one. I think I will be looking for used in a few months. Just totally up in the air on rather I want a RoadKing or Heritage Classic or Fatboy or ? LOL
