not really sure what you mean about the plug for the turn signals. but i had mine moved down to the forks and i don't remember having to remove the tank

I found a step by step tutorial somewhere on these forums some guy made while doing it on his fatboy. He cut the factory splices just behind the plug. Where did you cut yours?
