Default Cost to have cam chain tensioners replaced?

I got a quote the other day and it was around $750. What? The tensioners are about $40 each if I remember correctly. Add in a set of adjustable pushrods and soem torrington bearings and I am still way below $750. How many hours of labor does this take? I am considering doing this myself, although I have never done anything in the cam chest before. I just don't ahve the money for this. Spent it all on wheels. Before you ask my bike has 33K miles and is an 02. I figure if I open the cam chest to check the tensioners I might as well replace them. If someone can guid me in the right direction with all I need including special tools that would be great. I guess that with help of a friend We could tackle this. Post up...

Depends on what else they're doing when they're in there. If I remember correctly my dealer charges 12 -14 hundred if it is the first time being done, they machine out the cam support plate for better bearings, chain, and such, after that it's much cheaper. If all they're doing is replacing the tensioners, then yeah it sounds a little steep.
I'm sure you could do it yourself if all you want to do is the tensioners, you just need to make sure your cams and timing marks are all lined up correctly, that and a decent torque wrench.

I was charged 4.5 hours to install my gear drive cams.

Good Luck!

Are you having problems, or just trying to find ways to spend more money?

The local indy charges 6 hours to change to gear driven cams. There is no way I would pull that thing apart to just replace that shoe. I would do it right and put in the gears... Oh, and do a big bore kit for another two hours labor while I was in there...

Gotta start saving some money. I was quoted about $1300 with gear drives.

Labor should only be about 4 hours. If you are changing tensioners, you might as well swap cams. You are doing all the work anyway. If you are swapping cams, then you might as well go with gears the cost difference isn't all that great between a set of gears and a pair of tensioners...200 bucks or so....Of course if you are doing any of it on a bike with 33k miles, you should put in new lifters.......With all of the rambling aside, 1300 bucks for an installed gear drive is a good price.

A new set of S&S 510's with gears runs approx. $750. Add roughly 4 hrs labor (book time), at $75/hr, and you're up to $1050, plus gaskets, and tax.....$1300 is "reasonable."
