Default Gear drive Cams

I have a 05 Heritage Classic and just had the dealer install Wood TW6G cams and a SE pro super tuner and two hours of dyno time and i have to say the sound is great and now when you grab a handful she really pulls hard. The dyno reading are 79 hp and 88.20 torque and the tq is from 2500 up to 5000 and then it starts going down to 68 at 6200 rpm. Anyway i am very happy with the test ride and will be glad when the cold weather is gone so i can ride more.

I have the same cam with a power commander and love it. You can certainly feel the extra torque. I think I may do a 95 build this winter to give it a little more umph

Really glad to hear you guys like this cam, it is the one I have picked out as well. I also got some good "unsolicited" feedback from a guy at the dealer last weekend. It just came up in conversation. I want to do a 95" kit as well, but may do the cam first and a D&D Fat Cat first.

Does the gear drive set up whine at all? I heard they sometimes make a whinning noise.

It's not loud like, say, a supercharger. I've got V&H Big Shots (long) on my Deuce, so I can't really hear any of the engine. At idle, if I lean down I can hear the gear whine. too bad - I'd like it to sound like a 400 Chevy Big Block with gear drive, but what can you do.

Default gear cams

No gear whine that i can hear, at least not over the pipes. They by the way sound much deeper and a little louder i think. My buddie has the 95 big bore kit in his 88 and it runs fine up high but i think mine has a better power band . Big means nothing if you don't add fuel and air and cams and ignition and make it all work together. These cams work with a stock engine. The power comes on full at 2500 rpm and runs clean up to 5500 rpm. I am very happy i had it done. I just installed a Ultra Classic fairing on my Heritage and that makes it handle better and my mpg went up and it looks cool. I had nitrogen put in my tires at a dealer and they wrote my bike up as a FLHUCI grin

the 400 was a small block. Maybe you mean a 396 or 402. Gear drive setups don't really make much noise if you have a nice straight crank. Be sure to check your runout before you buy any parts.

A little whine when its cold but not much. I actually wish it had some whine like the Pete Jackson noisy gear drives do...just sounds cool to me.

How do you check your runout? Not sure what you mean.

Also, what parts, other than the cams and gear drive set up, gaskets, etc. would I need to use these cams. (i.e. pushrods, ignition, etc.)

Runout is basically a measurement of how out of round the crankshaft is or how much it wobbles. The left side (primary) isn't such a big deal, because the chain and compensator will take up a lot of the vibes and shake, but the right side of the crank can be a problem. Imagine a gear (for the cams) on the end of a twisted/bent/whatever crankshaft.

Actually, I just found a link to a pdf that explains it very well. It even has videos. Here is the link.

Is this something that comes into play with gear drive cams only? Is this a common issue, haven't really heard of it on here before?

I assume I would have to have a mechanic open it up to tell me this. Hmmm, something else to consider when deciding on going gear drive or not.
