Just ask for the 3/8 X 1/2 spacer and you should be good. And yep, you're right---fits between the middle post and mounting plate. The parts guy didn't know what I was asking for so I went to the service department---He walked out with boxes of different sizes and gave me one (chrome)---so I don't know the price---it's the only free thing I've ever gotten from HD>
I used a 3/4 inch spacer on the wifes Deluxe.. It fits her perfectly. You may want to use washers to test fit so you find the right size that you as an individual need.

I doubt if I would have gone any longer than 3/4" it seems to really make a huge difference past that point, and is much harder to get into place.

Alsdo, with the longer spacer, you need a longer mounting bolt for the center rail...Make sure you don't hjave one that is too short, it coulb break while riding...Better to have the bolt at least 1/2 inch into the rail.

Thought I'd throw this pic out with the Springer rail and backrest installed; heading over to the dealer today to see if I can track down a chrome spacer. Just another example of the great help you can get on this forum...thanks!

Here is my bike with the grabrail, part # 52687-97. I'm just waiting for the pad

Thanks for the part number. Is this the same rail as pictured in Kruncher's pic? I must be blind, because I can't seem to find the pad pictured on Kruncher's bike either. Anyone happen to have a part number?

Here is the part number for the tall pad...the rails are the same.

52827-97 Rider Backrest Pad, Tall

They also make a short backrest pad...don't have the part number for it. Good luck!

Thanks Kruncher! I think the shorty backrest has been discontinued as well, though some guys have found them on eBay. I'm a fairly tall guy and like the look of the tall pad, so no worries there.

One more question, does this backrest negate the passenger pillion? I see both bikes are setup solo, which is fine, as all of my riding to date has been one-up, but there might come a time when I want to strap the passenger seat back on. Any chance it will fit with the heritage springer rail?

The passenger pillion fits fine...at least the stock one does. I'm on the verge of ordering the wider touring pillion, so I'm trusting it won't have a problem either. The fit is a little tight with the Springer rail, but a little effort and it slips right on. My wife actually likes the rail and pad too, as it gives her someplace to "hang on" when needed.

That's good to know that the passenger pillion will fit. My husband said I had to give it up when he put the springer grabrail on. I really don't care to keep the pillion since I never plan to ride with a passenger but I will be looking for a nice looking tail cover. I'm still waiting on my backrest pad, the order may be in at my dealer but I'm in Utah now on a family RV vacation--pretty awesome scenery. Lots of hoggers on the road and would love to ride this area-- probably next year. My husband already toured this area on his Ultra last month and his pictures made me jealous. We did stop by Zion HD and I inquired about the pad, but of course, "not in stock". It's a lucky day anytime a dealer has a part you need!

I finally got my backrest pad on. I'll get some use out of it this weekend when we go to Hollister. Here are some pics.

Sorry, too small--if anyone can tell me an easy way to get good pictures on this site, I would appreciate it.
