If they're glued, use a heat gun to soften the glue. Throttles easy as long as you adjust them correctly afterward and you don't pinch a wire, otherwise it'll run ka-ka. The "little brass things" are called ferroules BTW.
If it is stock you just simply cut it off and use a fine sand paper to get the glue off. Some of the newer grips don't require and adhesive, just slip it on. You do have to take apart the housing but it is very easy and you'll love the savings
Alright, I've already changed out my left grip..piece of cake..but from what I'm getting here, I need to disassemble the housing on the right side to take that one off..so I'm about to go give that a try..and you can bet your sweet a$$ I'll be looking for that little brass thingy!!
Would I be better off paying the local Harley dealership $80 for one hour's work when they really only take 10-15 minutes to do the job?
Come on dude, you'd really take it to the dealer for that? Yes, it really IS only a 15 minute job.
The hardest part is scraping off all the old adhesive from the left grip. You should have no problem at all, and yea, it helps alot if you loosen the throttle cables, but I've been able to change them without doing that though, just makes it a little tough.
Cut off the old grip? What if I want to put it back on or sell them on ebay, . I worked a coat hanger under the clutch side grip to break the bond and twisted the grip off.
The right grip can be tricky the first time. Got to watch out for those brass thingamajigs. Best thing to do is find some vids on youtube or wherever so you can see before you do.
Definitely a diy job.
I used the HD grips and no glue was required.
