We've never been formally introduced...but it knows that if it doesn't perform, I'll tear it apart.
Seriously, ya just gotta work on 'em to get to know 'em. Just one man's opinion...

I knew when to shift after a few miles. My Heritage didn't come with a tach but I added a plug and play combo speedo/tach that was available back then. Now when I really wind it out I can see the redline.

Thanks Megawatt. By "jonesin' to get one" do you mean like "keepin' up with the Jones' "? Never heard that before, but I like it!

Yep, that's what it means.
He will have to sell his present bike before he can actually shop for a Heritage.

"Get to know your engine"? You mean like being able to shift without using the clutch, right?!?

took me about 3 hours of solid city/back roads. i have heard about the synth thing changing the feel.
as far as why some bikes have tacs. an some do not, my friend says the tacs. are for people who read, and the tac. less are for the people who know, I still dont know what the hell he means sometimes.
