Default Softail Deluxe mpg

Is it common for a new bike not to get very good gas mileage? at first I was getting about 20 mpg on my 08 Softail Deluxe that we bought in March of 08 ( I now have under 4000 mile on it )..I took it back in for service and we discussed the problem with the mechanics, we did discover some problems with the exhaust having some leaks and had them fixed the mileage improved some, now it gets about 37-38 mpg. shouldn't it be closer to 45-50 mpg...could this be the bike breaking in or could it be the riders style of riding?

I'm thinking the bikes with 30 something mpg's are not tuned properly.

I have an 05 with a 95" motor...102 FT LBS of TQ and 96 HP.....runs like a raped-ape. I get 43+ at 75 to 80 MPH on the fwy. These 08 bikes are not tuned right.

I'm just sayin......

: )

I get around 42 mpg. I'm running 2.25" Rush slip-ons, K&N and XIEDs.

Oh yeah, 16" Psycho Chubby apes on a 4" riser --- wind resistance. I'd probably get around 55 mpg without the apes.....

I've gotten as low as 35, and as high as 50 mpg. It really depends on how you are riding it at the time. FWIW 50 was on a highway run, and 35 is around town ripping it between stop lights.

I have an '05 and the last fill up I calculated at 42mpg. This is with regular gas and normal everyday riding. You can see the stats on my bike below.

Correctly tuned bikes should get between 40-50mpg. Unless your real nutty on the throttle..........

When I picked up my bike from the dealer (new) I was getting 32mpg I brought it in for the 1000 mile service and noticed right away the bike rode differentlly and now I get38mpg and it's bone stock..They did something to it when they serviced it..anyway that's all gonna change next month when I upgrade the exhaust, air cleaner and tunner..I guess I'll see...

My 2008 Deluxe averages between 40 & 50...depending on the road conditions. But I do ride very conservatively most of the time.
