Default What is the deal with the signal relocate?

I'll be installing leather detachable bags shortly and I see that I need to relocate my rear signals. From the pics, it doesn't look like they are in the way. It says it is required for all bikes. Someone here must have had to do this? Is it really required? I don't want to buy a bunch of crap that I don't need.

I'm sure it depends on what type bike you have, what type bags, what type detachable hardware................ etc. Need more info from you.

I got my bags from Ironbags. You can order them so they will mount far enough forward to clear your stock signals. I have an SE Fat Boy. It comes with the chrome trim around the seat. If I had opted to have my bags mounted forward I would have had to remove the chrome seat trim for clearance, so I ordered them in the position where I had to relocate my rear signals. I decided to go with Kuryakyn, LED, strut hugging, mini bullets.

I have an 07 fxst and I plan on installing hd #88238-07 detachable bags. On the web site it says all models relocate turn signals. The docking hardware #88298-07, softail custom also requires #88297-07 and all models relocation kit #69857-07. I have a seat off a custom with sissybar. They are saying I need 2 different docking hardware kits (if I am reading it right). In addition to the relocation kit.

Ok, now that we know you ride an FXST, you should get some answers from other owners. I have a Heritage, but I do know that it is a clearance problem in most cases. Maybe with non HD bags the relocation may not be necessary. If possible get your bags and brackets first to see if you'll need to move the blinkers? If so, go get the relo stuff.

The turn signal relocation kit isn't really a relocation kit, what it really does is get rid of the oval shaped stand offs that attach the turn signal light to the fender strut and replace them with small pieces of tubing to allow more clearance for bags and sissy bars. I didn't like the look of all that and went with the Kuryakyn Panacea tail light that had the signals built in and I removed the stock ones completely.

When I installed my detachable backrest the instructions said I'd have to relocate my signal lights also. It can be done without, just might take a little imagination. I'd wait till you get them as mentioned above & go from there.

If you buy the HD bags and sissybar like I did, then YES, you need to relocate the signal lights and you also need 2 different docking hardware kits.
I haven't installed mine yet, because I bought a laydown license plate frame that the signal lights will bolt to.

If you buy other bags with a flat back on them, you can go with the East Brackets and not need to relocate the signal lights.

Thank you sonar chris, that might be a better option. I'm going to have to search one of those out. I have a hard time believing that it costs about a grand to put bags on. They better be everything I expect or more. They should be here wed 8/27. I'll have to stop by the stealer and get the docking hardware kits. I'll keep you posted. Thank you all.

To add HD's Fatboy saddlebags I HAD to move my rear turn signals. I couldn't find the HD kit in stock anywhere so I went to J&P Cycles store and made-up my own kit. I got to keep my stock flared-stand offs.

I added the pigtail kit to the wiring harness and swapped to red lense covers so my turn signals became running lights, added brake lights, and turn signals.

The sticky post "Cheap do it yourself" threads has all my part numbers and more pics. Total cost was a tad over $12 after tax.
