Default Starter/Solenoid/Starting

Everyone I asked replied in harmony like a barbershop quartet when I described the problem starting my 05 Softail. When I would hit the starter, it would not engage the engine so everyone said "solenoid".
I took it apart, rebuilt the solenoid, sanded the rough spots off the gear that comes off the jackshaft then put it back together and it started fine. Whoopee! 500 miles later, sometimes the starter gear will not stay engaged to the primary long enough. It's good for one or two turns then it disengages causing me to have to try it a several more times.

There is no danger in me burning out the starter because it will not stay engaged long enough for it to happen.

What have I failed to do?

Two possibilities that I can see. (1) damaged idler gear and armature in the starter, or (2) starter clutch failure. My bet would be the latter, but you would have to get inside in either case.
