RE: 2006 Softail Standard vs. Heritage Softail
I have an `05 FXSTI,and love it.I extended the foward controls, and plan to do alot more. Its a daily driver for me in the warmer months, and every weekend,my girl and I are riding.Like they mentioned before;what kind of riding are you doing, long trips? Then something with a beefier front end may be up your ally.We bought the Standard cuz it was real cheap, and can customize till we`re blue in the face.
And we dont like bags, thats another reason we got the Standard.Would rather wear a huge backpack than have saddlebags, but remember, thats only our opinion!

I bought an 05 Standard cause the cost of living in SoCal didnt allow me to get a Deluxe or Heritage at the time. As I started to ride and made friends in the riding community I realized I could convert my FXST into a nostalgic looking Heritage/Deluxe hybrid- haha.
I ran the 16 rear, 21 front stock rims for awhile. But in this last phase of customization went to 18's front and rear. Also, footboards say alot for comfort on longer rides. So consider comfort first, style second.
Lastly, theres a bunch of seats available as well. Ive found the 03' Springer seat to be most comfy and stylish for my "old school" look.

I've been looking at forward controls for the standard, which I would need. When I look at the HD accessories I see one item that's labeled "forward controls" in their on-line catalog. The picture of it doesn't look like it's extended. Do these Harley forward controls move your feet forward from the stock position on the standard? Does anyone know?

The MOCO has literally a ton of parts labeled "forward controls" but they only market 2 kits for extending the forward controls on the FXST.
One in black and one in chrome. You will pay thru the nose for the chrome one.
The FXST I had was silver on the tins. So the black extended reach kit would have been the way for me to go.
It was around $400. And it moved everything forward somewhere between 1.5 to 2 inches.
The mounting bracket is where the movement forward occurs, everything else brake lines, cables, levers, etc was to compensate for the movement. For the black kit you reused your existing footpegs.
If you are comfortable replacing the rear brake line and bleeding the system you should be able to do the work yourself.
