Default Stage 1 and Remap

I have a 03 Heritage Springer and want to replace the stock mufflers and get some true Harley Sound out of her. I ahve been told that if I change the pipes I will have to put on a stage 1 kit and remap the EFI. If this is so, has anyone ever done it them selves??

Springer,

I have the Stage I on my bike, and the wife's 2001 Heritage also, and did them myself, except for the re-map on mine. Wife's is Carb, so I did the rejet myself. I would not change just the pipes. All the components are necessary for the fuel/air mixture to stay balanced.

The air cleaner and mufflers are pretty easy to do if you have a little mechanical skill, and some basic tools. After you're done, just take it and about $150.00 to the Harley Shop for the re-map.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Bill

Due to emmissions, stock Harleys are lean running....

If you enhance the flow (Air in, exhaust out), you change the efficiency. A remap puts it all back in place, usually with a performance gain. Intake and exhaust go hand in hand, and the computer makes it all happy if it knows the mods are there!

Yes, I agree with all above. You don't NEED the Stage I with the exhaust...but you will be VERY GLAD you did do it after it is done. It will give the bike a little more life...Remap is pretty much a requirement when you change these things otherwise the bike will not run well, so if you do them both at one time, you only have to pay to have the bike remapped once.

Power Commander is the way to go in my book. My 05 standard cooks with stage 1 without the download.

Yes, normally that's what peploe are referring to and this to can be a complicated subject in a sense, see my dealer said I didn't need the download to run pipe's, now I didn't change the air cleanner so I wasn't pulling in more air to lean it out but as investorsc stated they are leanner than crap from the factory so a remap is not a bad idea anyway.

I have an 04 Heritage and with just the pipes it ran a little hot. I just put the stage 1 kit on and a Dynojet Powercommander and did my own re-map. Very simple. I think it took me a total of about 1.5 hrs to do all the work taking my time. (I am no wrench either) It runs great and if I decide to change pipes or anything else that may require another re-map I can do it my self. My bike does run better since I added the stage 1 intake kit and re-mapped it

Re-maps are for intake mods only per my H.D. dealer. You do need to do it with just pipes.

I have an 04 Heritage classic and had the screamin eagle stage one kit and vance aand hines long shot FSs installed and the dealer did it all for $960.00. I thought it was pretty cheap to get done right, it runs good and gets 42mpg and I have just under 1K miles on it and will take it in for the checkup on friday. To me it was worth it to get the dyno run and efi map done at the dealer for a no problem with the warranty issues deal.
