Keep your knees against the tank. In the summer spread them.

As you mentioned, much of the air flowing 'up the sides of the tank' can be blocked by keeping your legs/knees against the tank.
Guess you could install wind deflectors (like I have on my Road king), but I don't really like the cluttered look.

Ran without my windscreen for a few months last Fall. Noticed the buffeting after it went back on. For me that is not so much the issue. Wind noise and bike noise are much bigger an issue. I have started to use ear plugs now on every ride. the air buffeting around is just too much and the constant pressure changes as well.

It's interesting that you say the lower profile windshield helped. It crossed my mind that less windshield might help the issue. I just ordered a two inches shorter than stock replacement from Cee Baileys. I like the fork bag idea.
As a last resort I will go with the memphis shades lowers or the chrome fangs. Since there is interest on the topic, I will post what I find.

just when I'm about to buy a detachable windshield for an upcoming long *** haul in May, I read this. Not sure what to do. I'm 6'5" so maybe a windshield wont help anyway. But if I have a harder time with wind with it on than without one then the purchase won't happen
