Default Have you tried different settings on your shocks?

I was boredtoday ,so I reset my shocks from the firmest setting, to the softest. Later I went on a 40 mile ride. Thought I would check out the difference in ride and handling. I always ride solo. When I got home and put the bike away, I realized I had forgot all about the different shock settings. I guess it doesn't make that muchdifference, or I should have noticed it.

Several months ago, I had asked the dealership to reset the shocks from the softest (4 threads showing) to about midway (2 threads showing). When I was getting ready to back off the retention nuts I saw that there were no threads showing. The dealer must have misunderstood me and had set them all the way to the firmest setting.

I was going to set the shocks myself the first time, but the retention nuts were loctited to the point that I couldn't break them loose.
When the dealership did the shock adjustment, they didn'tcharge me and I didn't buy the bike there.

I dont know what my heritage is set on now but it rides stiff. When I get on the back to see how much is lowers it I am told no more than 1/2 inch. I weigh 217. I told the dealer to put it on the 3rd thread. Maybe he did maybe he didnt. Rides hard in the back single up.

On a 2007 Fatty how do you tell where your rear shocks are set at?
I weight 160 lbs, and if I could have a wee more softness in ride that might be nice; I do not mind right now and think that it is probalby close but if there is a way to check and perhaps fine tune some....
Thanks,

Mark

Normally the shocks are set at the softest setting from the factory. If you click on the link that "darkside" put in his post, then click on preload shocks on the left side of the page, it will show you everything you need to know.
Look under the bike toward the forward attach point of the shocks and then look aft of the cross over support, in-between there and the end of the main shock tube is the retention nut. If there is 4 threads forward of the retention nut, you are at the softest setting.

My shocks were set with 4 threads showing and I never really had a problem, but while riding with my wife, we hit a rough RR crossing pretty fast and bottomed out. Next service I had them adjust the shocks to two threads and, while I can feel a slight difference when riding solo, it's a much better ride for 2-up.

I can't remember what the manual says about which way is hard or soft. I adjusted mine after somebody told me that when the wife was on that we were very low to the ground. (Remeber with a Deluxe your at 241/2" from the dealer.) I adjusted mine and no problems. I do notadjust them back when I solo.
