Thanks, I'm trying to get used to that now. Being new to the bike I haven't developed an ear for when to shift. I keep thinking I'm in 4th, so I pop it into the next gear and see the little green light pop on telling me I'm in 6th. It will come with time I suppose.

I believe this has something to do with 1-4 being helical cut, and HD within their infinite wisdom put straight cut 5th and 6th gears in the trans?

I think Baker makes a replacement kit for this, which will eliminate the noise all together.

I've read about this. Actually I only notice my after I first go into 5 and accelerate. Once it's up to speed I don't notice it. I don't know if this is because the engine is drowning out the noise or what. It's not a major issue for me as long as it's normal. We'll see down the road whether this fix is worth looking into.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, not sure I deserve it, but thanks anyway.

jimmers,
Im not sure why a lot of people "complain" about the gear noise. I mean if they wanted a silky smooth tranny and I have to assume everything else too. What the hell were they thinking about when they bought a Harley for Christ sakes?

If I had beenlooking for and wanted the latest, greatest, smoothest riding, most technologically advanced bike around I sure as hell would not have spent a ton of money on a loud and noisey bike that's basic design is nearly 100 years old. ABMW R or K series, OK that makes sense, but aHarley, I don't think so.

Anyway there are some good sound engineering reasons forusing straight cut gear teeth in the 1st and 5th gear set. They "may" not seem to be good enough for some people, but that's their problem. So while the Baker "upgrade" might be a nice thing. I personally don't think the benifits (whatever they are) are worth the cost. Especially if its just to eliminate a bit of gear noise. A decent set of pipes will be a lot cheaper, cure the problem and give you a couple of HP in the bargin.

If you want to see more about the gear setup and a better explination for them and why. Check out this link. Its an old posting that gives a fairly accurate picture of the cause of the noise and the reasons. Its a couple of years old and is talking about the original 06 Dyna 6 speed, but that's the same setup on our bikes so its still relevent.
