I work for an HD dealership in the Northeast, and I would say that at least half of the bikes with heated grips are back within a year. They are notoriously finicky. Whether it is the moisure in the air, the cleaning of the bike, or whatever, they just aren't reliable, and certainly not worth the price!

Stick with heated gear. I try to talk everyone out of heated grips at the shop.

I have a Gerbing's heated jacket liner and glove liners. The jacket liner is awesome and keeps me nice and toasty, and the glove liners are ok, but leave a lot to be desired. They have hot spots that cause can burns and that forces me to turn the gloves down (I have the dual controller - a MUST, IMHO) which causes my finger tips and thumbs to freeze. So this year, I decided to try out a pair of heated gloves, and after looking around at specs and trying on the HD gloves made by Gerbing (which I found WAY too bulky), I settled on the Warm n Safe Classic Rider gloves. They are on their way to me right now, so I can't comment on their performance yet, but the literature looks good. I will post a report when I get them and use them for a bit.

Cheers!

thanks for all the great feedback, looks like the gloves are the way to go, if it ever starts raining money then I'll go for both gloves and grips as someone suggested....

I went with HotGrips on my Heritage. Things can get hot enough to be uncomfortable. I've actually turned them down on cold days. HANDS TO WARM! Go figure. I added the adjustable thermostat and then added my own LED so I can see how high they are set while riding in the dark. LED is bright when on full and dims with the lower settings. One thing I did was added the Harley grip endcaps to make them look a little more Harleyish. So far the coldest day with them has been 40 degreesand raining. No problem. I can't wait for later in the winter to see how they do.
