If I understand what you are doing, you don't have to loosen the axle nuts, just the jam nut assembly. No need to have the bike on a lift but, depending on your set up,you may need to remove the pipes though.

The rear axle nut covers has a mounting bracket that goes behind the axle nut on left side and the axle head on the right side. These need to be loosened up tp slide the mounting brackets on. Then the coversgo on the mounting brackets with 3 allen head screws each side. (HD part # 47596-91B)

Sorry, the only ones I ever put on slid under the end of the swing arm, not the axle nut. Good luck.

Softcat, I think we have the same ones. I beleive you are talking about the covers that are shaped like a triangle and cover the whole nut and adjuster. Harley makes them in chrome and black. I put the Black ones on my 07 FXSTC recentlly.I put a jackunder the rear frame so I could juggle every thing around. If your bike is new make sure you pay attention to the instructions where they tell you to replace one of the thick washers with a thinner one included in the kit [assuming it is the ones harley makes]
You will love the look in the end. The instal took no time at all.

Yep JB those are the ones I installed, but chromeI did replace the thick washer with the thinner oneeven tho the directions said 2000 models only. I noticed the the cotter pin hole would not line up as good and tightening the axle nut to the torque spec still made ittight to get the replacement pin in. Iinstalled them Sat morning (9-15) and then went out and put 100 miles on, no problems at all.

I also put on new HD Skull series grips too, matches my pegs, shifter peg and rear brake pad. I am eventually going toinstall most of the skull series.
