Default '08 oil line leak?

All, I just bought a '08 custom and when I got it home last night I noticed some drips of oil on the two oil lines that goes into the engine from the oil tank. I called the dealer and he said it was ok he had some on the show room floordoing the same thing, just clean it up and ride. Has anyone else had this problem? It looks like the line has a plastic clip going into the motor. Is there an o-ring that might be bad?

Yea, don't take that from any dealer. New Harleys do not leak. The ones that do have something wrong.

Think of it this way,,,,,what design parameter of an HD motor is being served by allowing engine oil to drip off an oil line? Or, what EPA rule allows for the uncaptured discharge of engine oil into/onto the environment? (Even though I hate the EPA).

Heck....lawnmowers can't even drip oil anymore, and many of them use to have a wire-mesh filter hanging off the crankcase that did just that, drip oil.

I know I need to take it back, problem is finding the time. The stealer is over 100 miles away. Does anyone know how the conection is made. Does'nt look like it screws on, maybe an o-ring with a quick conect??????????? If it is something simple I would rather fix it myself.

Not sure, but for around $40 you could buy the repair manual from a Harley dealer that ships (like Zanotti's). This'll help you to fix this problem, as well as future problems. It'll also help with oil/tranny/primary fluid changes. With the dealer that far away, it becomes even more important. But, hell- I've got a dealer 10 minutes from my house, and I still avoid it like the plague for service.

They take a special tool to remove them properly and yes they have o-rings. You could try pushing on them a little to see if they are seated properly. If you've got the tool it's rather easy to fix but you probably need to get to the dealer for the tool and the parts since the o-rings are part of the connecting end and they come as an assembly(I don't think they sell just the o-rings)so you might as well make them fix it.

Thanks guys for the info. Looks like the top oil line was in a bind so I bent the lineat the 90 to relax the fitting. I also removedthe bottom line and re-installed it. I didnt have time to ride but I ran the motor at idle for 5 minutes with no issues. Man I hope this fixes the problem, always something to worry about.
