The play when moving the rear wheel is normal....

Clanking noise could be many things... For me to make an educated guess, I would need to hear it in person...

Were you able to figure out where the clunking noise came from? I have a 2000 Heritage Springer that makes a loud, and I mean, loud clunking noise when I shut the bike off, in neutral, with the clutch out. It is intermittent, and happens about once in every ten shut downs. Would pulling in the clutch make a difference?

No, still working on it. I have about 1,000 miles since I installed the new compensator and the clunk is still there. The clunk noise only happens when you are coasting and let the clutch out. From a dead stop there is no noise. I am going to look at it again this winter and post if I find the problem.
