Yes some kind of thread sealant does the trick. I use Teflon tape and it work for me. The main thing is don’t screw the plug in too far as it can crack the cover. I agree, the plug with O-ring in later models is much better.

It comes in three different weights/viscosities. Light, Medium, Heavy. The Medium is the best fit-all for most applications. The Heavy is quite thick and a little tougher to apply, the light is very light and runs.
