Temperature question
Maybe should have posted this in another thread, but I trust you fellow softtail guys so here goes.
I am running my 06 with Amsoil in all three holes, have a tuned PCIII, pipes, SE A/C kit. My running temp per the dip stick guage today after running about60-70 miles at 90 - 95 degrees was 225. May have gotten close to 230. Mostly all highway riding.
Is this about right for my set up and riding conditions? The reason I ask is b/c I have read some guys running at 200 - 210, but when the temp gets over 90, I can't keep mine below 220. Just want to make sure I'm safe.

RE: Temperature question
220/230 isn't bad at all, it could be lower, but it isn't bad.
If your concerned about it, you can always add an oil cooler and tune the PCIII to run .1 or so richer.
An oil cooler may not be worth a lot in traffic, but it does help get things to cool down faster and stay cooler once you get moving.
The additives in oil that help your engine live longer be they in Synthetic or Dyno oils are adversly impactedby two things, heat and time. The higher the heat, and the longer it laststhe shorter the lifespan. Any temps over 250 WILL shorten the additives lifespan. Synthetic oils can handle higher temps longer than Dyno oils without tuning into a tar like goo. But the additives placed in it to help your engine live longer are very similar or the same so even synthetic's can'teliminate the overall problem, they just 'postpone' it a bit.

RE: Temperature question
I'm not going to worry about it unless I start seeing consistent temps above 230, then I will look into adjsuting my PCIII map. Thanks for all the input guys.
I agree, the bike seems a lot cooler since my dyno tune and synthetic oil, so I'm just gonna ride it.
I really dont put much stock in the temp gage being all that accurate though.

RE: Temperature question
Just put a HD oil cooler on my 05 Fatboy today. Noticed a 20 degree drop in oil temp based on the oil tank dip stick. Rode around town and checked and than some hyway miles. Pretty much stayed in the 225 range. As this is Tucson in August, the temp at any time is the same.HOT!! B4 the cooler, temp was always around 250.
