I hate the silver coated engine. I bought every chrome piece I could to cover it up.

Dealer is going to look at my bike on Sunday for the powder coating coming off.

I would also like to paint the engine black or the dark gray like the CVO engines.

When painting the engine how did you tape off the fins.

I was thinking I could use a grease pencil or wax (crayon)as a barrier for fins and tight places.

Any tips for taping off would be great.

I guess the standard is just too, well standard.

No, I didn't tape off the fins. I just painted them and then took the paint off the edges... don't even remember what I used now (1978 was a long time ago). Taping all the stuff is a pain, but the details are what makes it or breaks it, so take your time and it will pay off. One trick I use on cars for hoses and wires that I don't want paint on is to just wrap them in aluminum foil. Easy to work with, stays in place, and easy to get off when you're through.

Let us know how it turns out!

One thing you might ask your paint store (automotive paints) is about prepping aluminum. Paint doesn't like to stick to it unless it's prepped.

They'll have an acid in a spray bottle that works. You leave it on a couple of minutes and hose it off. I don't know what acid it is but I've heard that it's just muriatic acid like you use in a swimming pool to adjust the ph. The acid etches the metal (you can't see it, it's too fine) so the paint will stick.

I purchased the Chrome Engine Kit. It will be my winter project.

I do have the service manual.

What basic tools will I need to do the installation and where can they be bought? I would just prefer to buy the tools I need.

When doing the kit, would you recommend putting High Temperature Silicone on gaskets?

I have been quoted crazy man hours by Harley Dealers to do the install. If I go with an independent what might I expect to pay?

Thanks again!
