Default Softail rear shocks

Bought a set of shocks for my 99 softail custom. Installed n didn't count the turns on each so that they would be turned the same for a stiffer ride. Took them back off to start fresh and now one of them just spins n is loose. Do I need to press it back together n tighten it back down?

Please help. Getting frustrated

If the shocks are similar to my 2013 FSLTC, then the compression mechanism uses the threaded mounting rod. Suggest you either

1) Re-mount the shocks on the bike, zero them out and then adjust, or
2) Put a wrench on the flat on the threaded rod, zero them out and adjust, then re-mount on the bike.
