Default whats the deal with tire pressure on trains???

What the deuce are we suppose to inflate the tires at? The side wall says 40 psi cold on front and rear stock 2007 night train. the ownwers manual says 30 psi front 38 rear solo and 30 front and 42 with a passanger. The dealer told me it has to be at 4o psi front and rear regardless of passanger, cant remember what the service manual says but i think its different. What is the right way to go 4o psi cold or 30psi front 40psi rear????? Its killing me!!!!

IIRC the 03 Softail service manual says 36 front and 38 rear solo, and 40 at both ends two up. Personally I am running Metzler ME880, and I like them at 36PSI cold.

If you just talking about what it safe, and not comfort/handling......I would think that anything above 30psi cold and 40psi cold would be safe. Just remember that road friction will cause the tire carcase to heat up causing the air pressure to rise.....could be as much as 5psi.

Tire pressure instructions are also on a sticker on the vertical part of the frame in front of the engine.

The psi listed on the tire is the max load the tire is designed to handle (max psi). In the owners manual or on the frame is what the factory says the bike handles and/or rides the best. The manual is the one I generally follow because it is designed for each specific motorcycle, and the tires are more or less a milti-fit item.

I too follow the manual, since HD knows what tire will be one the ride and the tire manufactor only produces the rubber and ships it off.

Follow the manual. If worried about safety, I'd err on the low side if I didn't trust my gauge. 5psi under will probably only hurt your mileage a little. But 5psi over could start to erode traction by decreasing the size of the contact patch. Just my non-scientific opinion..
